Biography

When the Mariners traded Randy Johnson to the Houston Astros near the end of the 1998 season in exchange for several prospects, there was quite an uproar in the Pacific Northwest. But that was before many fans got a chance to see Freddy -- who was one of those prospects -- in action. These days, you won't find too many complaints around Safeco Field. Freddy was a rock in 2001 as he led American League starters in ERA (3.05), innings pitched (238.2) and lowest batting average against (.225). He won 18 of the Mariners' 116 games, tying Oakland's Tim Hudson for fourth in that category.

Freddy missed nearly three months in 2000 with a hairline fracture in his right leg. That prevented him from equaling his 1999 total of 17 wins, but the Venezuelan right-hander still went 9-5, with a 3.91 ERA. He was outstanding in the postseason that year, winning two games against the Yankees in the AL Championship Series.

Freddy has good stuff and enjoys changing speeds. He has a fastball, a two-seamer, a curve and a solid changeup that he's not afraid to throw in any situation. Freddy burst onto the scene in 1999 when he went 17-8, with a 4.07 ERA, in 33 starts. He led first-year AL pitchers in a number of categories, but finished second to Kansas City's Carlos Beltran in the voting for league Rookie of the Year.
